Apicultura Mexico City: The Eco Beekeeping Experience You Need to Try

Last week I had the pleasure of going on an Airbnb Beekeeping Experience here in Mexico City. The experience was hosted and sponsored by Apicultura Mx. I brought my friend Jesse along and we got to learn all about how important bees are for the environment, plus taste some of the best honey I’ve ever had in my life. It was a truly wonderful experience. Here’s why you should add this beekeeping experience to your Mexico City bucket list.

What is Apicultura Mx?
Apicultura Mx is a company that provides beekeeping experiences and tours to people through Airbnb Experiences. They also have long term training opportunities if you want to learn how to keep a hive of your own.
Alfonso and Liliana, the hosts of the experience are wonderful people. They are both extremely passionate about the environment and the important role that bees play in keeping the planet healthy.
Why Should You Book a Beekeeping Experience?
Learn About Why Bees Play Such a Vital Role in a Healthy Environment
The first reason you should book a beekeeping experience is to learn about how important bees are for the environment. Alfonso and Liliana are super knowledgeable about what they do and will teach you why bees are endangered and how we can better care for them.
Before I did this beekeeping experience with Apicultura Mx, I knew that pesticides were bad for bees but I didn’t know why. With Apicultura Mx I learned that bees don’t have noses but instead breathe in chemicals and other things through pores located all over their bodies. Pesticides are toxic chemicals that kill insects and the problem is that they don’t just kill harmful pests. They also kill insects that we need to keep alive for the health of the planet too, like bees.
Support Local Businesses that are Helping to Save the Bees

Whenever I travel I try to support local businesses that care for the environment. Going on a beekeeping experience with Apicultura Mx is a great way to help save the bees in Mexico City. If the bees of our planet die out, we will die out, so this experience is not only a super fun and interesting thing to do, but it’s really beneficial for the environment as well.
What Happens During the Beekeeping Experience?
PowerPoint Presentation on the Importance of Bees & Saying No to Pesticides

When you arrive at the gardens at El Ectagono, the first thing you will do will be to watch a PowerPoint presentation on the important role bees play in a healthy environment. You will learn about how we can’t have fruits or veggies without pollination, the difference between queen bees, worker bees, and drone bees and so much more. You’ll also learn about the importance of organic farming methods, why pesticides are awful for the environment and the importance of staying calm and quiet when interacting with the hives.
Interacting with the Hives

After learning about safety around the hives, you will be instructed to put on a white suit over your clothing as well as a hat with a net to protect your face. You will also be given long gloves to protect your hands and arms. Make sure you wear close-toed shoes, long pants, and long sleeves under the suit. You will also be instructed not to wear any perfume or deodorant and not to drink any alcohol a full day before your experience when you book it online. This is because bees are really sensitive to smells and can get irritated by things like perfume, deodorant, and alcohol.
When viewing the hives, you will be able to see how the bees interact with each other. You will also get to see workers smoking the hives with burnt sawdust and oregano to help keep the bees calm. The guides will be able to point out the queen bee to you and you may even get to see some of the eggs the queen has laid and some larvae too. While you are interacting with the hives, one of the guides or apprentices will take out a frame and gently move the bees off of it so that you can taste some fresh honey afterward.
Tasting Fresh Honey & Viewing the Anatomy of a Bee Under a Microscope

Once you are done interacting with the hives, you will be taken back to the sheltered area where they show the PowerPoint presentations and you’ll get to taste some honey. If you’ve never had honey fresh from the honeycomb, you MUST try it! It is honestly one of the best and freshest flavors in the world!
While everyone is digging into the fresh honey, you will also get the chance to view the anatomy of a bee under a microscope. You will be able to identify the different parts of the bee’s body based on the PowerPoint shown at the beginning of the experience.
Why You Should Book with Apicultura Mx

Apicultura Mx normally does not sell their honey, but mainly offers it to guests who come join their beekeeping experience. It’s seriously some of the best honey I’ve ever had, and I used to work at a honey winery so I’m no stranger to honey fresh from the comb.
